Far too glad for thought

A year ago we wandered
The empty uplands wide,
Or in a leafy hollow
Mid wind-bewildered flowers
Forgot the turning hours:
Nor mused on what might follow,
But far too glad for thought
Strolled homeward silent, side by side,
Through veering sunlit showers.

Today, alone I wander
The empty uplands bare,
And where the earth is hollowed
I strew the flowers that wane
To thwart autumnal pain:
Nor muse on all that followed,
But sorrowful past all thought
Stroll nowhere, anywhere,
Through the tall, sunless rain.
