The most foolproof moral rule ever devised

Confucius formulated what is perhaps the most foolproof moral rule ever devised. When asked a follower for a word that could serve as a principle to guide one’s life, he replied:
Is not reciprocity such a word? What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.
This is such a lovely rule because – unlike the precept ascribed to Jesus, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” – it’s impossible to use it to program or preach or proselytize. It’s an expression of respect and tolerance for other customs and traditions, the only sure way to avert a clash of personalities or civilizations. And it comes from a man who during his own lifetime was mostly derided or ignored.
